The season is two months away, yet Seattle soccer fans are ready to welcome their team the Seattle Sounders to Major League Soccer. The fans have done their part by purchasing more season tickets than Major League Soccer averaged in attendance last season. What’s astounding about this figure is that if they don’t sell one more seat in the stadium, they will be better than 11 of the league’s 14 other teams were last season in bringing fans to the game. The Sounders are also in good financial shape as well as they look to turn a profit after their first year in the league and it doesn’t hurt that they have the backing of their hometown NFL team, the Seattle Seahawks as well as Microsoft that is paying $20 million for the rights to put Xbox 360 Live on the full front of their soccer jerseys.

Now the preseason news of the ticket selling, the turning of profits and financial backings from big partners is all great news but the one thing the Sounders have yet to do is bring in a big time player that will help them win right away. Sure they have the top MLS coach in Sigi Schmid, but will aging Swedish star Freddie Ljungberg and retired US National team goalkeeper Kasey Keller be enough to win games and keep the excitement in Seattle? Right now the excitement is high with a new soccer franchise in Seattle, but a losing season can quickly turn that excitement down a few notches. Hopefully the fans will be as loyal as Toronto FC fans and give the team a few years to get some wins under their belt and stay faithful to them and if they can make the playoffs in 2 or three years, the first rough year will all be worth it. Hopefully the fans will give coach Sigi Schmid a few years to show them he is the coach worthy of taking this expansion team and making it a winner and if things don’t go well on game day the fans can always go home and look for a better result on their Xbox Live 360 at home while playing FIFA 09.
