US Men’s Soccer Needs Some Jersey Identity

Think about some of the World Cup soccer teams across the globe and when you think of a particular team you can identify them with what their soccer jersey looks like. If you don’t believe us, we thought of five national soccer teams right off the top of our head and had no problem coming up with their soccer jersey color and how we remember it.

Italy – The jersey is usually all royal blue
Argentina – You immediately think of their light blue and white vertical stripes
Holland – Their soccer jersey is all orange, all the time
Mexico – You think of their Kelly green jersey body with red and white thrown in the mix
Brazil – Their all yellow soccer jersey is legendary.

Now the US men’s soccer team has gone through a transition of soccer jerseys, much like their play on the field. The problem with the soccer jersey part is, you can’t pinpoint or identify them with a soccer jersey look. Think about the World Cup 1994, the team had a blue jersey with white stars throughout the body; their 2002 white jersey had red and blue zigzag triangle shapes on the side, during the 2006 World Cup the Americans were known for a all white jersey with red and blue vertical stripes going down the left side of the jersey and worst of all during the CONCACAF Gold Cup last year, they work a royal blue jersey with white vertical pinstripes throughout the jersey. Fast forward to the current jerseys, we again are given two jerseys that are far different than what they’ve worn in the past.

The current US home jersey is a white and a grayish jersey with thinly red stripes going horizontally separating those two colors and it’s finished with a blue cap on the sleeves. This jersey isn’t bad, but for all US soccer fans, keep this look for their home jersey since it does look like a decent jersey. Now the bad part is their current away soccer jersey. Looking at the jersey, I still have a hard time figuring out what color the jersey is. Is it a grayish and navy blue mixture? That’s the best I can come up with and it just doesn’t make sense that they would do this for their jersey color when the colors of the nation are red, white and blue.

I really hope that when World Cup 2010 rolls around, the team gets a home and away jersey that is purely red, white and blue. Take out the gray and navy colors and stick with the colors on the flag. And after this World Cup, keep the jerseys for future use so that when you think of the US men’s soccer team, you can immediately identify their soccer jerseys. Now we all know there will always be some tweaks to the jerseys in the future, but it would be great as a fan that wears soccer jerseys to be able to wear the US soccer jersey and have some identification for future use.

We’d love to hear your thoughts about the state of the US men’s soccer jersey. Is it good or bad to have constant change for their jerseys?

  1. I agree. Maybe a strong Navy Blue for the home jersey and a bright red for away (not too bright that is fluorescent like a highlighter).

  2. [...] we didn’t like about the 2009 Italian Confederations Cup home jersey Remember our article on how we said the US national team needed to form an identity and have a jersey they would be [...]

  3. A bright red jersey would indeed be a good choice.
